Networking Windows XP to Orator Windows 2000
1) Enter XP Logon Name and Password into Orator Windows 2000 User Manager On the XP computer, find out your current logon name. If you don't already know it, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click the Users tab:
Enter User Name and Password on Orator System On the Orator Windows 2000 computer, right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Manage from the popup menu that appears. Double-click on Local Users and Groups and then Highlight Users. All users will appear on the right side. Right-click on the right side and select New User from the popup menu that appears as shown below.
A window similar to the one below will appear. Complete the information including the User Name and Password you are using on the Windows XP computer. Leave only the User cannot change password and Password never expires checkboxes checked.
2) Set Workgroup Name on Both Computers Check the Workgroup and Computer Name on both computers. Make sure that the Workgroup names are the same and the Computer names are different. To view the Computer and Workgroup names in XP, click Start, then right click on My Computer and select Properties from the popup menu as shown below.
The window below will appear. Click the Computer Name tab. Change the Workgroup name if necessary to match the one on the Orator or vice versa.
To view the Computer Name and Workgroup on the Orator Windows 2000 system, right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Then click Computer Name tab. Change the settings there if necessary.
3) Configure the TCP/IP Settings on Both Computers Starting with the Windows XP computer, click Start, then right-click on My Network Places and select Properties as shown below.
The Network Connections window show below will appear. Right-click on Local Area Connection (for the correct network card) and select Properties from the popup menu as shown below.
The window below will appear.
Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). The window below will appear.
If you are not sure what your IP address should be, enter the settings exactly as shown in the figure above. IP address 192.168.100.150 and Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 All other setting should remain blank. Do a similar procedure for the Orator Windows 2000 computer. First right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the Desktop. Select Properties from the popup menu. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the popup menu. Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Use and IP address of 192.168.100.100 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Click OK to return to previous window. Click the Advanced tab as shown below.
Make sure the Internet Connection Firewall in not checked at this time. If all networking goes well, you can enable it later. The Firewall may make the networking process more difficult.
4) Share the E: Drive on the Orator Windows 2000 Computer Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop. Right-click on the "E:" Drive. Select Sharing. The Sharing Properties window will appear. The current share may be called "E$". You must create a new share. Click the "New Share" button in the bottom right corner. Enter a new share name as "E" (without the $ sign). Click OK to save the settings. At this point, properly reboot both computers - one at a time.
5) Find the Shared Network Drive on XP Computer and Map the Drive On the XP computer, click Start, then right-click on My Network Places and select Search for Computers from the popup menu as shown below.
Enter "Orator" in the Computer Name field as shown below. Click Search. If the Orator computer is found, it will appear on the right side. Simply double-click on the Orator icon on the right side. The "E" folder should appear within it. Right-click on the "E" folder and select Map Network Drive from the popup menu. The window below will appear.
Select whichever drive letter you prefer. Make sure that the Reconnect at logon checkbox is checked. Then click the Finish button. That's it. If all went well, you should be able to click Start | My Computer and see the newly mapped drive on the Windows XP computer. You are now ready to install the Bytescribe Export Utility to export files from the Orator Dictation computer.
